ELKHART, Ind. (AP) - A former sheriff’s captain in northern Indiana charged with lying during an investigation into alleged wage theft by employees he supervised has pleaded guilty in the case.

The Elkhart Truth reports 50-year-old Jim Bradberry entered the plea to one of three counts of false informing.

He told the court Wednesday he didn’t immediately divulge certain conversations he overheard among employees in the process-server division in Elkhart County over the years. He was given a one-year suspended jail sentence. The other counts were dismissed.

Bradberry’s lawyer Phillip Miller said he considered the terms of the plea agreement fair, since Bradberry had taken full responsibility for his actions and resigned from the sheriff’s office.

Employees in the division were accused of collecting $45,000 for hours they didn’t work between 2014 and 2017.
