BOSTON (AP) - U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III is calling on U.S. Sen. Edward Markey to agree to limit the amount of outside money and personal attack ads in the Massachusetts senate contest.
Kennedy is hoping to unseat the incumbent Markey in the 2020 Democratic primary.
Kennedy pressed Markey and two other Democratic primary candidates on Tuesday to agree to a so-called “People’s Pledge.”
Similar agreements have sought to curb outside groups from spending on television, radio or digital ads or sending direct mail fliers. The candidate who benefited from the ad would donate half the ad’s cost to a charity picked by an opponent.
A Markey spokesman said the campaign will review Kennedy’s proposal. They said they were still waiting to hear from Kennedy on their call for a climate change debate.
