PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island says authors of nonfiction in the state will now get a sales tax break.

The ACLU sued the state in May on behalf of the Association of Rhode Island Authors and three writers who had been denied a tax exemption under a 2013 law.

The lawsuit argued that a sales tax break for authors was unconstitutional because it only applied to works of fiction because the state said nonfiction was not considered “creative and original.”

The ACLU announced Tuesday it withdrew the suit after confirming that the state’s Division of Taxation had given the tax break to nonfiction writers.
