MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Latest on special election to replace U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy (all times local):

2 p.m.

The special election in Wisconsin to replace Republican U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy will be held Jan. 27.

Gov. Tony Evers on Monday announced that will be the general election date, with a primary on Dec. 30. The 7th Congressional District covers mostly rural central, northern and northwest Wisconsin.

Duffy was resigning effective Monday, citing concerns with the pending birth of his ninth child who has been diagnosed with a heart defect.

Republican state Sen. Tom Tiffany has already announced his candidacy, but many other Republicans and Democrats are considering it. Whoever wins would have to run again for a full term in November 2020.

Evers opted to hold the election at a time separate from next year’s April presidential primary election. Conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly is also up for re-election that day.

As Republican U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy spends in his final day as a member of Congress, the focus shifts to who else will run to succeed him in a rural Wisconsin district that’s the heart of Trump country.

Duffy’s resignation Monday also clears the way for Gov. Tony Evers to announce when the special election will be to fill the seat. The Democratic Evers has said he will announce the date soon.

The former MTV reality show star was elected to Congress in 2010 representing the 7th Congressional District.

He is resigning more than a year before his current term ends ahead of the birth of his ninth child in October. Duffy says that child has been diagnosed with a heart defect that will require extra attention.

Republican state Sen. Tom Tiffany is the only announced candidate.
