President Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen has been “living like a celebrity” ever since he was imprisoned in May, according to his lawyer.
David Schwartz, who represents Cohen, said the former presidential fixer is “doing great” in New York’s Otisville Federal Correctional Institution while he serves a three-year sentence for charges including campaign finance violations and tax evasion.
“People wish Michael Cohen is getting beaten up every day in prison — but he’s literally the mayor of the prison,” Mr. Schwart told Page Six. “He’s doing great. The other inmates call him ’Mr. Mayor.’ He’s a celebrity in the jail. Everybody is coming up and shaking his hand. He’s enjoying hanging out with the other inmates.”
Cohen now “has a job fixing fire hydrants,” which he enjoys, the lawyer said.
“He looks great — he is tan, works out every day and has lost more than 30 pounds,” he said. “He is basically very unstressed. The only downside is he misses his family.”
Otisville is seen as one of America’s loftiest prisons, boasting basketball and tennis courts, a baseball field, a full gym and personal sleeping cubicles.
Cohen reported to prison on May 6 after pleading guilty to breaking campaign finance laws for hush-money payments that he says were given to porn star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, a claim that Mr. Trump has denied.
Cohen also pleaded guilty to tax evasion, “understating his debt and equity,” and lying to Congress.
Cohen claimed to The New Yorker before his incarceration that he was the fall guy for Mr. Trump.
“You are going to find me guilty of campaign finance, with McDougal or Stormy, and give me three years — really?” Cohen said at the time. “And how come I’m the only one? I didn’t work for the campaign. I worked for him. And how come I’m the one that’s going to prison? I’m not the one that slept with the porn star.”
