PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gov. Gina Raimondo says it’s unfortunate that a nonprofit health care system insisted during merger talks that its chief executive become the head of a proposed medical center.
The Providence Journal reports it obtained a letter Raimondo wrote last month to the Care New England board chairman.
In it, Raimondo takes issue with the board trying to require that the Care New England president be installed as the CEO of the merged entity and lead the transition.
Care New England said in July its board voted to formally withdraw from discussions with Lifespan, Rhode Island’s largest hospital system, and Brown University in Providence.
Raimondo, a Democrat, wanted the parties to establish a locally-run, academic medical center.
A Care New England spokesman says they didn’t believe the arrangement would meet its needs.
