DENVER (AP) - Denver’s mayor is proposing to set a $15 an hour minimum wage in the city by 2021.
The Denver Post reports Mayor Michael Hancock and Councilwoman Robin Kneich will formally announce the proposal Thursday.
The full City Council would have to approve before it becomes official.
The statewide minimum is $11.10, rising to $12 next year. A new state law allows cities to set their own rates.
The federal minimum is $7.25, but the U.S. Department of Labor says 29 states and the District of Columbia have higher rates, up to $14 .
The Denver proposal would reach the $15 amount in two steps, at the beginning of 2020 and 2021.
Hancock already has raised the minimum wage for city employees and contractors to $15 an hour.
