The Maryland Terrapins will honor former football coach Ralph Friedgen on the field during the first half of their next home game, Sept. 27 against Penn State, the program announced.
“We’re going to bring Ralph Friedgen, a guy that has really had a huge impact on my career as a mentor and as a coach, back to College Park for the game next Friday against Penn State,” coach Michael Locksley said in a statement. “I can’t tell you the impact that Ralph has had on the Maryland football community as well as college football.
“He’s a guy that I have the utmost respect for, that I’ve always looked up to as a guy that loves and has a passion for this place like I do. We’re going to bring him back and honor him the right way. I’m excited, as well as our team and our fans. We’re looking forward to having Ralph in College Park.”
Locksley worked for Friedgen in 2001 and 2002 as the Terrapins’ running backs coach and recruiting coordinator.
Leading the Terrapins from 2001 to 2010, Friedgen is the third-winningest coach in program history with 75 wins. He led Maryland to seven bowl game appearances and five wins, the most bowl victories for any Maryland coach.
Maryland is 2-1 and has a bye week this week before hosting the No. 13 Nittany Lions for a Friday night game in College Park to open their Big Ten schedule.
