TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida House Republicans have elected a 35-year-old rising star to lead their chamber over the next two years.
Rep. Chris Sprowls will preside over a chamber overwhelmingly dominated by Republicans. The state Senate is also dominated by Republicans, and all but one of Florida’s statewide offices are occupied by Republicans, including the governorship.
During his address, Sprowls made his conservative agenda clear - including his opposition to abortion. But he urged his party to let down their guard on issues such as climate change.
He also took swipes at elected officials who rise to grandstand, who he says are “more concerned about the content of a tweet than the content of a bill.”
When asked about President Trump’s tweets, Sprowls says they “distract from all the great things he’s doing.”
