COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - The site of a former school could become a new YMCA in a Georgia city.
Muscogee County school officials tell the Ledger-Enquirer of Columbus that a community center and former school they’re selling is likely to become a YMCA.
The school board proposes to sell 5.31 acres (2.15 hectares) for $460,000. The land includes a community center operated by Columbus. The city stopped event rentals on July 1 in preparation for sale, but some groups are still using it.
Willie Brown, president of an area civic association, says he worries that losing the community center will hurt his neighborhood, writing in an email that “the YMCA is a totally different type facility and purpose.”
YMCA of Metropolitan Columbus president and CEO Mario Davis hasn’t responded to a request for comment.
