In a new interview with Vogue, pop artist Rihanna said she “absolutely” turned down a chance to play the Super Bowl halftime show as a way to show solidarity with Colin Kaepernick.
Rihanna said she “couldn’t dare do that.”
“Who gains from that?” she said. “Not my people. I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler. There’s things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way.”
Maroon 5 performed at the Super Bowl instead.
Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since the 2016 season. The quarterback’s supporters have argued he has been blackballed from the league for protesting racial injustice and police brutality during the national anthem.
