MEXICO CITY (AP) - David Biller, who has reported on topics ranging from the rise of populism under Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to an isolated indigenous tribe suffering the effects of Venezuela’s collapse, has been named by The Associated Press as its news director for Brazil.
The announcement was made Wednesday by Matt Chandler, AP’s news director for Latin America and the Caribbean.
“David will lead a talented and energetic text, photo and video team that has consistently provided fast, engaging and insightful coverage of stories that have resounded in Latin America and around the world,” Chandler said. “At a time when Brazilian politics and the threat to the Amazon are resonating globally, we look forward to the impact.”
Biller, who will remain based in Rio de Janeiro, joins AP from Bloomberg News, where he focused primarily on the Brazilian economy and government. He led reporting on Bolsonaro’s 2018 presidential run, chronicled the devastation of Brazil’s two-year economic crash, and also turned up indications of corruption surrounding the assassination of a woman striving to clean Rio de Janeiro’s bay for the 2016 Olympics.
Before moving to Brazil in 2012, Biller worked in Mexico and Chile, covering oil and renewable energy for the Business News Americas agency while writing for magazines, including National Geographic en Español.
Biller, 36, started his journalism career as an intern at CBS News in New York after graduating from Vanderbilt University. He is originally from Sudbury, Massachusetts.
