MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A school system in Georgia is set to offer teachers free child care for days when classes aren’t in session but teachers still have to work.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the Professional Association of Georgia Educators says the Marietta City School System appears to be the first Georgia school system to do this. The newspaper notes other states have school systems that provide child care for teachers.
Superintendent Grant Rivera says the idea was proposed by West Side teacher Autumn Martin. He says four days of care will be provided in the 2019-2020 school year. Spokeswoman Jen Brock estimates the care for children ages 4 through 12 will cost the district about $9,000. About 52 children already have signed up for the program.
