The Washington Redskins struck first in their game against the undefeated, defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots thanks to an unlikely contributor.
Steven Sims Jr., a wide receiver more often deployed in the return game, turned on the jets on this first-quarter end-around and scored a 65-yard touchdown to put Washington up 7-0.
Sims, who made Washington’s initial 53-man roster of the season as an undrafted rookie, broke through two would-be tacklers before sprinting the rest of the way:

But the Patriots responded on their next drive for a quick touchdown. It would have tied the game, but kicker Mike Nugent missed the extra point, making it 7-6 Redskins halfway through the opening period.
