HERALD, Calif. (AP) - The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office says a man was killed in a shooting that involved one of its deputies, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Sgt. Tess Deterding says the shooting took place about 2:15 p.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of Bennett Road near Herald in the southern part of the county.

Deterding says 911 callers reported that there was a suspicious man known to the area and known to carry weapons, and a deputy responded to the scene, contacted the man, and discovered he was armed with a handgun, the Bee reports.

Deterding says shots were fired within a minute, and fire personnel were requested to administer first aid immediately afterward. She says the man was declared dead on the scene, the Bee reports.

Deterding tells the Bee that the deputy who shot and killed the suspect is a 19-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office and has 17 years patrol experience.
