NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) - An oil and natural gas company that was founded in Mississippi 70 years ago is closing its local office.

The Natchez Democrat reports Callon Petroleum announced Thursday that it is closing its Natchez office in mid-2020 to save costs.

Callon said in November that its official headquarters would move to Houston, Texas but that about 25 to 40 employees would stay in Natchez. Those employees have primarily provided accounts services.

Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer Mitzi Conn says Callon is merging with a Houston-Based company that has its own accounting office.

Economic Development Director Chandler Russ says he’s concerned about the highly skilled employees but hopes other companies in the area pick them up.

Callon President and CEO Joe Gatto declined to comment on specific employee severance plans.
