DENVER (AP) - Authorities say a man suspected of stealing a car in a small town east of Denver apparently killed himself after being stopped by deputies following a chase into the city.

The shooting shut down a stretch of Interstate 70 in Denver Thursday, creating extensive delays.

Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office’s Capt. Jared Rowlison said the man was suspected of stealing the car from a man in Strasburg, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Denver. He said a deputy spotted the vehicle near town and pursued it at over 100 mph (161 kilometers) at times but said the suspect slowed to about 25 mph as he hit traffic in the Denver area.

Denver police spokesman Jay Casillas said non-lethal rounds were fired by law enforcement before a gunshot was heard inside the car.
