Washington Wizards center Ian Mahinmi will be held out for at least six weeks due to a strained right Achilles tendon, adding to the long list of Wizards who are injured before the season even begins.
A news release from the team said Mahinmi will be “treated conservatively” before a re-evaluation six weeks from now.
Coach Scott Brooks first mentioned Mahinmi was dealing with “Achilles pain” at the team’s preseason media day Monday.
“It’s nothing serious,” Brooks said at the time. “But we have some challenges ahead right now with our limited guys during training camp.”
Besides the most high-profile injury on the list, John Wall’s ruptured Achilles tendon, the Wizards are also currently without C.J. Miles (foot surgery), Isaiah Thomas (thumb) and Troy Brown Jr. (calf).
Thomas Bryant won the starting center position last year, so Mahinmi was destined for a limited role as his backup in 2019-20. But when the regular season begins Oct. 23 at Dallas, Mahinmi won’t be playing at all.
