ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Workers from a Twin Cities area plant that was closed over lead poisoning concerns are calling on the state to reopen the plant.
Dozens of workers from Water Gremlin came to Gov. Tim Walz’s office Tuesday and called for officials to lift the shutdown.
Minnesota officials say Water Gremlin hasn’t done enough to limit workers’ exposure to lead dust at its White Bear Township facility. At least 12 children of employees who apparently carried lead dust home on their bodies and clothing were found with elevated blood levels of lead.
The workers met with Labor Commissioner Nancy Leppink, who ordered the shutdown. Minnesota Public Radio News reports Leppink told workers the state felt it had to step in to protect families.
The company makes lead fishing sinkers and battery terminals.
