PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Foundation says $425,000 is available to local organizations to fund outreach for the 2020 Census.
Local nonprofits, municipalities, houses of worship and public agencies including libraries and schools can apply for grants of up to $25,000 through the Rhode Island Census 2020 Fund, a statewide, collaborative funding initiative.
The grants will help fund programs to reach hard-to-count communities.
The census will help determine how many congressional seats each state gets, as well as the allocation of hundreds of billions of dollars in federal spending. The foundation says it wants to protect the $3.8 billion a year Rhode Island receives in federal funding for education, health care, transportation and housing based on census data.
The deadline for the first funding round is Nov. 25.
