GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi board has recommended more than a dozen projects for funding next year from a settlement the state received after the 2010 BP oil spill.
The Sun Herald reported Thursday that the Gulf Coast Restoration Fund Advisory Board is calling on the state in 2020 to spend a little more than $32 million from the settlement on a new Ocean Enterprise center for the University of Southern Mississippi.
The center is intended to bolster South Mississippi’s capacity for engineering and maritime technology. Other projects recommended for funding next year include a new YMCA and an expansion of the Gulfport-Biloxi airport.
The state Legislature will have final say over what projects are selected.
The state will also have additional settlement money to spend in coming years.
