PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The city of Providence will decide whether a former city councilman who pleaded no contest to embezzling thousands of dollars from his campaign will be banned from collecting his monthly pension.

Deputy City Solicitor Kenneth Chiavarini told the retirement board Wednesday that the Law Department will advise them on what to with former City Councilman Luis Aponte’s $500-a-month city pension.

Aponte was charged with embezzling nearly $14,000 from his campaign. He pleaded guilty to one count of felony embezzlement in July and agreed to resign from city council.

The board voted unanimously Wednesday to approve Aponte pension application, but their vote will not impact the city’s ability to move forward with reducing or revoking Aponte’s pension.

The city’s lawyers will advise the board on their decision on Nov. 20.
