NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A Utah man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting death of an elementary school teacher in Virginia.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that Ed Shaw entered his plea Tuesday in Norfolk. He faced trial on a first-degree-murder charge that could have sent him to prison for life if he was found guilty.

He faces eight to 43 years in prison when he’s sentenced in January.

Shaw killed 50-year-old teacher Caroline Hendrix on New Year’s Eve 2017. Police said Shaw meant to kill a man, Alex Novak, who was with Hendrix that night.

Shaw and Novak were romantic rivals and had been involved with the same woman, Teniqu Cushman.

Shaw had shot Hendrix after she got into Novak’s car. Novak was in a nearby garage. He shot and injured Shaw.
