OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) - Officials in Burkina Faso say attacks in the past few days have killed at least 19 civilians in the West African nation’s northern region where Islamic extremists are gaining ground.
North Central Regional Councilor Adama Sawadogo says armed men attacked Zoura village in Bam province overnight Sunday into Monday, killing at least nine civilians. He says a weekend attack on a funeral in Boulga village in Sanmatenga province killed at least four people. Another attack in Loroum province killed six.
Officials also say four soldiers and a policeman were killed Friday night in two attacks in the north.
Burkina Faso’s border with Mali is increasingly insecure as Islamic extremists spill into the once-peaceful country.
