SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Syracuse is retiring the jersey of former basketball standout John Wallace.

Wallace’s No. 44 will be officially retired in a ceremony on Feb. 29, 2020 when Syracuse hosts North Carolina. Wallace is the 15th player to be so honored, joining a list that includes Carmelo Anthony, Dave Bing, Derrick Coleman, Sherman Douglas, Billy Owens and Dwayne “Pearl” Washington.

A prep star at Greece Athena High School near Rochester, New York, Wallace’s best season in college was his final one in 1995-96 when he led Syracuse to the national championship game. He averaged 22.2 points and 8.7 rebounds and earned second-team, All-America honors. He also set a school record for points in a season (845).

Wallace finished his Syracuse career ranked third in scoring (2,119) and rebounding (1,065).
