NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A U.S. marshal says a tip to Tennessee university police led to the arrest of a disbarred Georgia attorney who stole client settlements and is accused of killing his mother.
U.S. Marshal Eric Heinz tells WXIA-TV that Nashville police got a call Friday from Vanderbilt University police about someone casing cars. Heinz says officers ran the tags of cars that were potentially broken into and learned one belonged to the mother of Richard Merritt. He’s accused of killing her and stealing her car after being sentenced to prison in January.
The station says police suspected Merritt was close by and set up surveillance, quickly learning where he lived and about a restaurant he frequented. Authorities made their move Monday , arresting Merritt at a Nashville thrift shop.
