RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The North Carolina General Assembly has confirmed three of Gov. Roy Cooper’s recent appointments to the State Board of Education, one year after Republican legislators voted against two of his choices.

House and Senate members meeting in a rare joint floor session on Wednesday voted 140-8 to approve the appointments of J.B. Buxton of Raleigh, Donna Tipton-Rogers of Brasstown and Wendell Hall of Ahoskie.

The GOP-controlled legislature rejected the appointments of Buxton and an Asheville educator in June 2018. But later in the year Cooper picked Buxton to fill a vacancy, then re-appointed him last spring.

A governor appoints 11 of the 13 voting members of the board, which sets state education policies. The 11 appointees serve eight-year terms. The other two members are the lieutenant governor and state treasurer.
