MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. (AP) - A truck assembly company has announced it will lay off 900 employees between two North Carolina Freightliner plants in the coming weeks.
Daimler Trucks North America, the parent company of Freightliner, confirmed Tuesday that about 450 employees would lose their jobs at the manufacturing plant in Mount Holly and another 450 would be laid off at Rowan County’s Cleveland plant by Oct. 14.
Daimler said in a statement the layoffs come as the truck market returns to normal levels after a year of record sales.
Mount Holly employee Robin Jenkins told the Gaston Gazette some employees are scared because they don’t think they’ll be receiving severance, though other employees said they’re used to the “cyclical nature” of truck building.
Daimler hasn’t said whether employees will be offered a severance package.
