SEATTLE (AP) - The family of a 23-year-old woman shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies conducting a welfare check has filed a federal civil-rights lawsuit contending deputies escalated the situation.
The Seattle Times reports in a story on Friday that the family of Renee Davis filed the lawsuit against the King County sheriff’s office, the former sheriff, detectives and other officials.
The lawsuit contends that the deputies involved in the shooting were poorly trained when they went to check on Davis, who the lawsuit says was suicidal.
Davis was killed on Oct. 21, 2016, after deputies entered her home on the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation and say Davis pointed a gun at them. She had three young children and was four months pregnant.
A previous wrongful-death lawsuit filed in King County Superior Court last year was dismissed.
