ATLANTA (AP) - The University System of Georgia has created a panel to find ways to help students with mental health issues.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the task force announced Wednesday will look at what’s working at its 26 colleges and universities and identify successful programs elsewhere to see if they can work in Georgia.
Research shows 10% of American college students have seriously considered suicide. The newspaper says some Georgia students and their families have complained that schools don’t offer enough counseling services.
The concerns were highlighted two years ago when a Georgia Tech student suffering from depression was killed by a campus police officer. His family has sued the school and the university system.
Albany State University President Marion Fedrick and Valdosta State President Richard Carvajal will lead the task force.
