NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - The Connecticut Office of the Child Advocate says the New London School District needs clear protocols regarding staff interactions with students, documentation of those interactions, and supervision of employees who frequently meet alone with students.
Child Advocate Sarah Eagan is investigating the district following the arrest of three former employees: two on sexual assault charges and one for failing to fulfill her role as a mandatory reporter.
Eagan recommended the changes Tuesday in a status update for the ongoing investigation.
One paraprofessional faces charges related to the alleged sexual assault of two middle school students. He was hired despite a federal drug conviction. Another paraprofessional is charged with having an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old high school student.
Eagan says the district should comply with state and federal hiring requirements.
