PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island judge has granted a request by a man twice convicted of murder to test DNA from a 2007 case.
Superior Court Judge Susan McGuirl approved the request Wednesday to test a piece of evidence from the scene where Alfred “Freddier” Bishop is accused of killing 35-year-old Gabriel Medeiros.
The 77-year-old Bishop is serving life in prison for the killing of Medeiros in Warwick.
WJAR reports that Medeiros’ family said he had been living in his brother’s basement when he confronted a masked and armed intruder.
Bishop has maintained his innocence even though his DNA was found at the scene. He claims he was beaten with a golf club and someone else killed Medeiros.
Bishop’s attorney asked the court to DNA test a different part of the golf club.
