MSNBC’s “Hardball” host Chris Matthews is taking time off from the show to recover from prostate cancer surgery, the network announced Monday night.

“Before we go tonight, Chris hasn’t been here the last few nights and he wanted to let you know why,” fill-in host Steve Kornacki said on the show. “Chris is recovering from prostate cancer surgery last week.”

“The procedure went well, but he’s taking a few days to get back into fighting shape,” he said. “I know he’s looking forward to getting back very soon.”

Mr. Kornacki did not give a return date for Mr. Matthews, whose last appearance was Oct. 4, The Hill reported.

Mr. Mattews, 73, has been hosting “Hardball” for 25 years.
