LITHONIA, Ga. (AP) - Authorities are investigating how diesel fuel entered a Georgia creek.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports cleanup crews were dispatched late last week to the Wesley Branch tributary in DeKalb County. A county statement says an emergency hazmat team responded Thursday after a resident reported the issue, and crews used absorbent barriers to help contain the fuel.
It says the environmental agency HEPCO has been contracted to clean up the area, which is near Lithonia.
County police say they’re now investigating how the fuel got into the water. State environmental officials were also notified and visited the site. The county statement urged residents to avoid the area until further notice.
The newspaper notes diesel fuel is a highly combustible petroleum product that can harm wildlife and the environment.
