LONDON, Ohio (AP) - Aviation safety officials question why a now deceased recreational pilot let his medical certification expire and if it was related to his death.
Seventy-nine-year-old Donald Apple died in a plane crash earlier this month and it was discovered that he did not complete the physical mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The Columbus Dispatch reports the FAA requires pilots to be evaluated every four years by a licensed physician. Apple’s certification expired on Sept. 30, 2018.
Richard G. McSpadden Jr., executive director of the Air Safety Institute, questioned why Apple would risk his own safety.
Sally Apple, the late pilot’s wife, says her husband was taking a trip to Ohio State University that he’d taken annually for decades.
