The Washington Redskins will not pay left tackle Trent Williams after placing him on the season-ending non-football injury list on Thursday, according to multiple reports.
Williams could have collected the remaining $5.1 million of his $10.8 million salary while on NFI, but teams have the option to withhold the salary under the league’s collective bargaining agreement. According to ESPN, teams have paid roughly 35 to 40% of the salaries to other players on NFI this season.
The Redskins and Williams have been in a highly public dispute over the last several months, with the left tackle holding out for the first eight games over the season over a dispute with the team’s medical staff and his contract. Last week, Williams revealed a cancer diagnosis for a tumor he says wasn’t properly treated while with the Redskins.
After showing up last week, Williams will now have one year left on his contract after this season. It is likely the Redskins will explore trading the seven-time Pro Bowler in the offseason.
