CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Gibbons has announced he will not seek another term on the Supreme Court in 2020.

The Nevada Appeal reported Tuesday that Gibbons announced his decision Monday.

Gibbons says he wanted to make the announcement early so “people interested in the position could decide to file for the office.”

Officials say Supreme Court justices serve six-year terms. The election begins in January 2020.

Officials say Gibbons is the longest-serving member of the court since being elected as a justice in 2002.

Gibbons was a Clark County district judge for six years before his election.
