CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg is heading for a runoff as he seeks a second term.
Tecklenburg received 48% of the vote in Tuesday’s election, but that was not quite enough to avoid the runoff with second place finisher Charleston City Council member Mike Seekings.
Seekings picked up about 34% of the vote in the five candidate race.
In 2016, Tecklenburg replaced Joe Riley, who was Charleston’s mayor for 40 years.
The Charleston mayor runoff will be Nov. 19.
In North Charleston, voters appear to have given Mayor Keith Summey a seventh term.
Summey received 46% of the vote Tuesday, while business owner John Singletary finished second with 36%.
North Charleston election rules don’t include a runoff.
Singletary has not conceded, saying he wants to check on possible voting irregularities.
