ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - President Donald Trump isn’t a fan of New York’s new bail reform law, which will curtail the number of people jailed while awaiting trial.
The president tweeted Tuesday that New York’s Democratic governor and mayor “are letting out 900 Criminals, some hardened & bad onto the sidewalks of our rapidly declining” city.
That was a reference to estimates from New York City’s corrections officials on the number of prisoners who might be eligible for release under the new law.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo punched back, saying Trump gave up his right to call New York home when he recently claimed Florida residency.
The state’s law was passed to address complaints that poor people accused of minor crimes were often jailed for long periods because they couldn’t afford to post bail.
