GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Police say a high school teacher in North Carolina has been charged with raping a 17-year-old student.

The News & Record reports that 57-year-old Daniel Webster Smith Jr. of Raleigh was charged Monday with sex offense with a student and second-degree rape.

Smith was a teacher at Ben L. Smith High School in Greensboro. Police said that Smith resigned from his position after his arrest.

Police said the student reported the assault. Police did not release information about where the alleged rape occurred.

Smith taught JROTC at the high school.

Smith was sent to Guilford County jail in lieu of $110,000 bail. A message left at a phone listing for Smith wasn’t immediately returned.
