COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) - A Columbus man is scheduled to be sentenced in January for the death of his passenger after the vehicle they were in crashed.

Platte County District Court records say 32-year-old Martin Gomez Jr. pleaded no contest Monday to felony vehicular homicide while driving reckless. Prosecutors had lowered the charge from felony vehicular homicide while under the influence. The Columbus Telegram reports that Gomez’s sentencing is set for Jan. 3.

The crash occurred around the morning of June 22, about 5 miles (8 kilometers) north of Columbus. Authorities say the Gomez’s northbound sport utility vehicle went out of control, entered a ditch, veered back onto the roadway and rolled several times before coming to rest in a field.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office says his passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. He’s been identified as 24-year-old Joseph Sullivan. He lived in Columbus.
