CONWAY, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina county has canceled a contract with the state highway department to help build an interstate ending at Myrtle Beach.
The Horry County Council unanimously voted Tuesday to end the agreement with the South Carolina Department of Transportation at least for now.
The county was setting aside a tax on hotel rooms and restaurants first levied more than 20 years ago to pay for Interstate 73. Horry County’s agreement with cities in the county ended in 2017, but the county kept collecting the tax.
Myrtle Beach sued Horry County over that earlier this year.
Horry County Council Chairman Johnny Gardner says the county can’t give the highway department money it doesn’t have.
Local, state and federal officials promised to keep working to settle the dispute and build I-73.
