MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) - Officials from a spill response team have announced that cleanup of refinery oil in Washington state was completed Sunday.
The Skagit-Valley Herald reported Monday that the Shell Puget Sound Refinery spill was reported Friday during the transfer of crude oil from Alaska’s Northern Slope from a barge to the refinery.
The response team said Saturday that about 20 gallons (76 liters) of oil spilled due to problems with a pressure release valve.
Officials say the barge was carrying 5 million gallons (19 million liters) of oil.
Officials say about 5 gallons (19 liters) made it into Fidalgo Bay but were removed from the water.
Officials say the response team included the refinery, Coast Guard, state Department of Ecology, Skagit County, Lummi Nation and the barge company Crowley Maritime.
