Reaction from Kentucky officials to Republican Gov. Matt Bevin’s concession to Democrat Andy Beshear, ending the state’s bitterly fought governor’s race:

-Kentucky House Speaker David Osborne: “With today’s concession announcement, the governor put the people of Kentucky first and ensured that their voices are heard and their votes respected. It is our hope that it also cements his own legacy as a leader willing to address the most controversial, unpopular issues if they are critical to this state. On behalf of the House Majority Caucus, I want to thank the governor, first lady and family for their service to our commonwealth and wish them the very best in this next chapter of their lives.”

-Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers: “Today’s announcement by Governor Bevin to concede the Kentucky governor’s race signals that this is the moment where politics ends and policy discussions begin. We in the Senate Majority appreciate many of the things that the governor did for the commonwealth during his tenure. We have seen fiscally responsible budgets, unprecedented economic growth, crucial improvements to our state parks, long overdue contributions to our pension systems and much more. I look forward to working with Governor-elect Beshear to build upon the progress Kentucky has made over the past four years.”

-Eddie Campbell, president of the Kentucky Education Association: “We are relieved to know that Governor Bevin has finally accepted the will of the people and decided to concede the race for governor. For educators across the commonwealth this means they truly made the difference in electing Andy Beshear as our next governor. … This election isn’t the end of educator activism in Kentucky. It’s just the beginning. Educators look forward to working hand-in-hand with Governor Beshear to ensure public education is the ultimate priority in moving Kentucky toward a brighter future for our children and our communities.”

-Jim Carroll, president of Kentucky Government Retirees: “Kentucky Government Retirees commends Gov. Bevin for his prudent decision to concede the gubernatorial election. Any attempt to thwart the will of the people by contesting the election without evidence of voting irregularities would have been disastrous. We look forward to establishing a strong line of communication with Gov.-elect Andy Beshear on pension-related issues.”

-Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles: “I would like to thank Governor Matt Bevin for his service to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and for his commitment to a smooth transition for the incoming administration. Over the course of the past four years, the Bevin administration and the General Assembly have worked hard to move our state in a positive direction. From creating tens of thousands of new jobs to dramatically increasing exports, we will look back on this era as one of positive economic expansion.”
