COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - A 69-year-old man is dead after being struck by an off-duty police officer in Georgia.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports it happened Tuesday about 10:45 p.m. in Columbus. The Columbus Police Department says the officer, in a marked police car, hit Lester Holloway as the officer headed into work to begin his shift.

Holloway was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Details of how the accident happened have not been released. Georgia State Patrol is investigating.

The Department of Public Safety says it’s unknown whether the officer, whose name has not been released, will be placed on leave or face any charges.
