ONTARIO, Calif. (AP) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection says its officers seized eight counterfeit Honda airbags at Southern California’s Ontario International Airport.
The agency said Tuesday the fakes were found in September during an enforcement examination of express air cargo packages.
Automotive import specialists confirmed the airbags in two packages from China violated Honda’s trademark.
Had they been authentic, the seized items would have been valued at more than $4,800.
The agency says airbag fraud may occur after a vehicle is involved in a wreck and the original airbags are replaced.
Airbags sold online at what appear to be deep discounts may be counterfeit.
Ontario International Airport is about 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.
