House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that neither her chamber’s investigations into President Trump nor some members’ eagerness to impeach him is politically motivated.
“It has nothing to do with politics,” she told reporters. “Impeachment is one of the most divisive things you can do, dividing a country, unless you really have your case with great clarity.”
Mrs. Pelosi was speaking a day after the House Judiciary Committee voted to recommend holding Attorney General William P. Barr in contempt of Congress.
She said there’s no set schedule for the whole House voting on that, and she suggested they may wait for a critical mass.
“There might be some other contempt of Congress issues we want to deal with at the same time,” she said.
The California Democrat has been trying to balance the enthusiasm for impeachment among some of her activists with most voters’ reluctance to go that route.
She repeated her statement, though, that Mr. Trump is “self-impeaching” because of the obstruction he’s mounting against House committees’ investigations.
Mrs. Pelosi said the battle between the legislative and executive branches of government has become a “constitutional crisis.”
