HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A push to increase Connecticut’s minimum hourly wage to $15 is moving through the General Assembly.
By a 32-19 party-line vote, the Democratic-controlled Appropriations Committee on Tuesday advanced legislation that would increase the current $10.10 an hour rate to $15 over three years, beginning January 1, 2020. The bill also links future minimum wage increases to the consumer price index.
Democratic House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz (ehr-eh-SIM’-oh-wits) of Berlin says the House of Representatives may vote Wednesday on the bill. It remains unclear, however, if the legislation will be changed.
Democratic Sen. Cathy Osten of Sprague, the Appropriations Committee co-chair, says the bill remains “a work in progress.”
Republicans unsuccessfully attempted to scale back the bill Tuesday. Employers ranging from nursing homes to municipalities warn the legislation presents a financial burden.
