COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Gov. Henry McMaster has withdrawn his appointment to run the board that oversees the state-owned electric utility after he was rejected in a Senate committee vote.
McMaster sent a letter Monday to Senate President Harvey Peeler dropping his appointment of former state Attorney General Charlie Condon to be chairman of the Santee Cooper board.
The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 19-4 last week to not recommend Condon’s appointment, a clear signal the nomination was in deep trouble
McMaster wrote the Senate’s progress on a bill seeking bids for a private company to buy or manage Santee Cooper may make the position unnecessary.
Condon did serve briefly as interim Santee Cooper chairman. The governor said Condon’s leadership was key to getting senators prepared to give up control of the utility.
