Sen. Kamala D. Harris, a presidential candidate, said Sunday the reason that Democrats Stacey Abrams and Andrew Gillum lost their gubernatorial races was because of voter suppression.

“Let’s say this loud and clear: Without voter suppression, Stacey Abrams would be the governor of Georgia; Andrew Gillum is the governor of Florida. So the truth is, we need a new voting rights act,” the California Democrat said during the NAACP Freedom Fund dinner in Detroit. She later tweeted that same statement.

Ms. Harris said she also supports making Election Day a national holiday and automatic voter registration.

Both elections were extremely tight, and Ms. Abrams, who was running to be Georgia’s governor, has yet to fully concede her election, instead filing a federal lawsuit against the state’s voting laws.

She claims her opponent, Gov. Brian Kemp, committed voter suppression that was “deliberate and intentional.”

Rep. Elijah Cummings, Maryland Democrat, opened a House Oversight investigation into the reports in March, saying residents faced “unprecedented challenges” when attempting to vote and questioned why Mr. Kemp did not recuse himself from running his own election as secretary of state.
